- παραμύθιον, ου, τό (παραμυθέομαι) pert. to that which offers encouragement, esp. as consolation, means of consolation, alleviation (Soph., El. 129; Thu. 5, 103, 1; Appian, Mithrid. 28 §110 πενίας τὴν σοφίαν ἔθεντο παραμύθιον=‘they used philosophy [only] as a means of consoling themselves for their poverty’, or ‘to alleviate their poverty’; Kaibel 951, 4; PFlor 332, 19; Wsd 3:18; Philo, Praem. 72; Jos., Bell. 6, 183; 7, 392) εἴ τι π. ἀγάπης if there is any solace afforded by love Phil 2:1 (SEG 28, 953, 30 [I A.D.].—DELG s.v. μῦθος.
